What Are Turkish EFL Teachers' Attitudes Towards Classroom Research

The study was conducted at the English preparatory school of a highly competitive state university in Istanbul, Turkey, in the first term of the 2,004-5 academic year. At the time of the study, there were 923 students at different levels of English—i.e. advanced, intermediate, and elementary levels—and no EFL teachers, 107 Turks, and 3 native speakers of English.

The present professional development programme was initiated at the request of the head of the prep school and took the form of a collaborative effort between the university and prep school to promote teachers' critical thinking, collaboration, and instructional effectiveness through research. At the beginning of the first term all teachers were informed about the professional development programme which would be led by the researcher. They were also told that the programme would be held in the afternoons after class for six weeks, each session would last about four hours. Sixty-two teachers volunteered to attend the programme and were grouped into four sections—two groups for each term. Eighteen teachers, 13 female and 5 male, volunteered to participate as the first group. These teachers completed a background questionnaire and wrote down the topics they would like to discuss in the programme.

The participants were all native speakers of Turkish with an average age of 33.5 years (SD = 6.87) and with 9.22 (SD = 3.32) years of teaching experience. They were teaching English about 18-21 hours a week to Turkish students at different levels. All teachers indicated that they had attended various one-shot seminars given by the Turkish Ministry of Education, British Council, or various publishing companies. None of them had ever carried out research in their classes. In planning the course I had decided to focus initially on the topics teachers asked for. The information collected during the first informal meeting was used for this purpose. Their suggestions were grouped under the following topics: student motivation and attitudes, learning styles and strategies, and classroom management issues, especially ways of questioning and giving feedback in E LT.

After I met the group, I realized it was necessary to update their knowledge of E LT. So in the first two weeks, I provided them with theoretical knowledge on each topic; I introduced the relevant topic and terminology, and gave examples from research studies. Le Sentier was frequently cut off from the outside world by severe snow storms during long and harsh winters. A few decades later, in 1866 to be exact, Antoine LeCoultre and his son decided to bring together all the aspects of a watch's production under one roof. And to enable all of these activities to be able to function properly, a steam driven machine was installed to operate all the necessary tools. LeCoutlre & Cie was born. Because of this innovative approach to the production of watches, the factories in Le Sentier soon became affectionately known of as the 'Grande Maison' of the Vallée de Joux.

The other half of the Jaeger-LeCoultre story begins in Paris in 1903.

Edmond Jaeger designed an ultra-thin caliber, and he challenged Swiss watchmakers to manufacture these. It was Jacques-David LeCoultre, Antoine's grandson, who took up the challenge and succeeded. The LeCoultres brought their exceptional watch making craft skills, while Jaeger, a brilliant designer, gave their joint productions a distinctive style that is the unmistakable Jaeger-LeCoultre label. This partnership gave rise to a set of horological wonders,Cartier sales discount sale, and then in 1937 the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand itself.

Both independently and together these two men forged relationships with some very well known creators of luxury watches. One of the most famous diamonds in history, the Hope diamond, came from India and weighed 112 3/16 carats when it was acquired around 1642 by French merchant Jean Baptiste Tavernier, who was struck by its "beautiful violet" color. He sold it to the King of France, Louis XIV, who had it re-cut to a 67 1/8 carat stone which royal inventories thereafter listed as the Blue Diamond of the Crown of France.
